Course Description
Completion of this course enables qualified Remedial Massage Therapist to practice as a Myotherapist in their own practice, or as a member of a health clinic.
Entry Requirements
Academic Requirement
(1) Successful completion of Australian Year 12 or the Australian/overseas equivalent is mandatory. Students must be 18 years old and above; and
(2) Successful completion of HLT52015 Diploma of Remedial Massage; or
(3) Successful completion of HLT52021 Diploma of Remedial Massage; or
(4) Hold the HLT50307 Diploma of Remedial Massage and have current membership at a practitioner-level (not affiliate membership) as a Remedial Massage Therapist with one of the following Australian professional associations:
- Association of Massage Therapists (AMT)
- Australian Natural Therapists Association (ANTA)
- Massage Association of Australia (MAA)
- Myotherapy Association of Australia (MA)
- Massage & Myotherapy Association (MMA)
- Australian Traditional-Medicine Society (ATMS)
English Requirement
International students must achieve an English language proficiency equivalent to IELTS 6.0 with no score lower than 5.0 for all courses.

*On 26 July 2023 the TOEFL internet-based test (TOEFL iBT) stopped offering English language tests for Australian visa purposes. Only TOEFL iBT scores from tests taken on or before 25 July 2023 are accepted for Student visa purposes.
**From 12 February 2024, only results from the paper-based Cambridge C1 Advanced test will be accepted for visa and migration purposes. Scores for earlier tests remain valid if taken within the validity period.
Note: As part of the enrolment process, students are required to complete a Language, Literacy, and Numeracy (LLN) test to ensure that the student has the ability to complete the course.
Course Structure
The program comprises of the following 10 units of competency:
Core Units
- VU23632 – Apply knowledge of pain science in a clinical setting
- VU23633 – Develop, implement and evaluate corrective exercise
- VU23634 – Manage health risks in a myotherapy environment
- VU23635 – Apply myotherapy clinical practice
- VU23636 – Perform myotherapy clinical assessment
- VU23637 – Plan, implement and evaluate the myotherapy treatment strategy
- VU23638 – Provide myotherapy treatment
- VU23639* – Provide myofascial dry needling treatment
- VU23640 – Research, evaluate and apply information about myotherapy clinical practice
Elective Unit

On successful completion of the program, learners will be awarded with 22656VIC Advanced Diploma of Myotherapy.
Mode of Delivery
- 20 hours Face-to-Face delivery per week.
Supervised Activities (Face-to-face, classroom)
The delivery is classroom-based with students completing in-class activities, presentations, discussions, and assessment tasks which include:
- Practice exercises that reinforce the required practical skills.
- Learning activities in the training environment in small groups and pairs.
- Using textbooks, reference material and handouts to support learning.
- Independent reading, preparation, and learning exercises.
- Assessment tasks.
Learning styles are catered to by using whiteboard illustrations, multimedia presentations, oral instructions with handouts, and interactive learning through role plays, case studies and supervising the practical implementation of skills.
Delivery has been timetabled to ensure students develop theoretical skills and knowledge and demonstrate practical skills in a class situation before commencing project assessment tasks.
Assessment methods
The institute’s assessment methods include:
- Written assignments,
- Written and Oral questioning,
- Observation,
- Work-based projects.

Recognition
An application can be made for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) when the student believes that they have already attained the necessary skills and competencies elsewhere (work, other study etc.) or have an equivalent qualification or part of a qualification.
MIA recognises the AQF qualifications and Statements of Attainment issued by any other RTOs and grants credit for these towards an award where applicable.
The application for RPL and/or Credit Transfer should be lodged prior to or immediately after the enrolment.
