About this course
Course Description
This qualification reflects the role of individuals in the community, home or residential care setting who work under supervision and delegation as a part of a multi-disciplinary team, following an individualised plan to provide person-centred support to people who may require support due to ageing, disability or some other reason.
These individuals take responsibility for their own outputs within the scope of their job role and delegation. Workers have a range of factual, technical and procedural knowledge, as well as some theoretical knowledge of the concepts and practices required to provide person-centred support.
The skills in this qualification must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian standards and industry codes of practice.
To achieve this qualification, the candidate must have completed at least 120 hours of work as detailed in the Assessment Requirements of the units of competency.
No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this qualification at the time of publication.
Entry Requirements
Academic Requirement
(1) Successful completion of Australian Year 10 or the Australian/overseas equivalent is mandatory. Students must be 18 years old and above.
English Requirement

English language tests: Students must achieve an English language proficiency equivalent to IELTS 6.0 with no score lower than 5.0 for all courses.

**From 12 February 2024, only results from the paper-based Cambridge English C1 Advanced test (previously known as Cambridge English: Advanced CAE) will be accepted for Australian visa and migration purposes. Test scores for both C1 Advanced paper-based and computer-based formats received prior to 12 February 2024 are also accepted.

- HLTINF006 – Apply basic principles and practices of infection prevention and control
- HLTWHS002 – Follow safe work practices for direct client care
Elective Units (AGEING, HOME AND Community Specialisation)
- CHCDIS020 – Work effectively in disability support
- CHCPAL003 – Deliver care services using a palliative approach
- CHCAGE011 – Provide support to people living with dementia
- CHCAGE013 – Work effectively in aged care
- CHCDIS011 – Contribute to ongoing skills development using a strengths-based approach
- CHCDIS012 – Support community participation and social inclusion
On successful completion of the program, learners will be awarded with
CHC33021 Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing, Home and Community).
Mode of Delivery
- 20 hours Face-to-Face delivery per week for 52 weeks duration
- 40 hours Face-to-Face delivery per week for 26 weeks fast-track duration
Supervised Activities (Face-to-face, classroom)
The delivery is classroom-based with students completing in-class activities, presentations, discussion, and assessment tasks which include:
- practice exercises that reinforce the required practical skills.
- learning activities in the training environment in small groups and pairs.
- using textbooks, reference material and handouts to support learning.
- independent reading, preparation, and learning exercises.
- assessment tasks.
Learning styles are catered to by using whiteboard illustrations, multimedia presentations, oral instructions with handouts and interactive learning through role plays, case studies and supervising the practical implementation of skills.
Delivery had been timetabled to ensure students develop theoretical skills and knowledge and demonstrate practical skills in a class situation before commencing project assessment tasks.
Assessment methods
The institute’s assessment methods include:
- Written assignments,
- Written and Oral questioning,
- Observation,
- Work-based projects.
- RPL
Recognition
An application can be made for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) when the student believes that they have already attained the necessary skills and competencies elsewhere (work, other study etc.) or have an equivalent qualification or part of a qualification. MIA recognises the AQF qualifications and Statements of Attainment issued by any other RTOs and grants credit for these towards an award where applicable. The application for RPL and/or Credit Transfer should be lodged prior to or immediately after the enrolment.

Additional Requirement
Prior to Placement, you will need to receive and provide evidence of the following checks:
- You must complete your online NDIS Worker Screening Clearance application at this link – NDIS Worker Screening Unit (WSU), and nominate MIA as your employer. There is no cost to students. MIA will verify each student.
- Students must also complete the NDIS Worker Orientation Online Modules (4 modules/approximately 90 minutes in total). Upon completion, students will need to provide their Certificate of Completion to both MIA and their placement provider.
- Annual Influenza Vaccination – needs to be undertaken by 1 May each year for attendance at Aged Care facilities/settings
- For placement at a Queensland Health Facility – up to date COVID-19 Vaccination
Some Aged Care organisations may require Hepatitis B immunisation
